No visit to far northern Queensland would be complete without a leisurely stroll along the beautiful Cairns Esplanade, following the city's shoreline. With views extending over Trinity Inlet to the east, and over distant rainforest-shrouded mountains to the west, it's the perfect spot to chill out on a balmy tropical evening.
From early morning until well into the night, there's so much to see and do in this wonderful, open-air playground. The path that meanders through the parklands hemming the Esplanade is a popular spot for walkers of all ages, while fitness enthusiasts will enjoy the free outdoor exercise equipment in what is undoubtedly Australia's most spectacularly-located gym.
If relaxing in the water is more your thing, be sure to check out the awesome Esplanade Lagoon - also totally free of charge. This large shallow, salt-water pool is a great spot to head for first thing in the morning, or as the sun sets. Open throughout the year, it's patrolled by qualified lifeguards during its opening hours. It's also the venue for free Active Living fitness classes, which include yoga, pilates, water aerobics, tai chi, and zumba.
Children aren't forgotten, either, in this tropical paradise. Along the Esplanade, there are several very good adventure playgrounds for them to enjoy.
Finally, if you prefer shopping to exercising, every Saturday from 8am until 5pm, the fabulous Esplanade Markets are held here - purveying a wide assortment of tantalising goodies, such as locally-made clothing, jewellery, skincare, craft and much more.
Directions Cairns Esplanade is right in the heart of the city, bordering Trinity Inlet, and is therefore very easy to find - from anywhere in the city, just walk towards the waterfront.
