Description
Sovereign Hill is a living historic museum set around 1853, the height of the gold rush in central Victoria. It is very popular with tourists, families and school groups seeking to relive this fascinating period in Australian history.

There are many activities to keep visitors amused, such as panning for gold, riding a stage coach, exploring the underground mines, making candles, and dressing up. For more information about traveling through the Victorian Goldfields with children click here.

Directions: If driving, take the Western Highway 90 minutes west of Melbourne, then follow the signs to Ballarat. Sovereign Hill is located south of Ballarat and is clearly signposted.

If traveling by train, there is a Goldrush Special, which delivers visitors directly to Sovereign Hill. Purchase tickets through VLine.

I love Sovereign Hill. It's a good idea to allow a whole day to explore, there is so much to see.
Actually, all Sovereign Hill tickets are valid for two days (great value for money) and I highly recommend spending two days there, especially if you have younger children who take a while to get from one activity to another.
